"Champions aren't made in in gyms.  Champions are made from something they have deep inside them:  A desire, a dream, a vision.  They have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will.  But the will must be stronger than the skill" - Muhammad Ali

 "BIG TIME TURNAROUND"

July 2006

Congratulations to the Scholar Athletes for their successful visit to Las Vegas recently. Scholars headed out to Sin City Saturday, July 22nd to compete in the prestigious 2006 Reebok Big Time high school basketball tournament, an event that is widely considered the largest and most successful summer hoops event of its kind. Over 300 teams from all across the country arrived in Vegas to prove they got what it takes to reach the "Big Time".

Scholars stumbled out of the blocks Saturday with a disappointing 59-43 loss to Columbus BC of Ohio in pool play. Unfortunately, their woes continued with a three point loss to the Indiana Dawgz and a lopsided victory for Total Package of Washington. Spirits were definitely down Sunday evening after the Scholars camp finished pool play without one victory heading into the "C" Bracket 18 of the tournament.

But Coach Gregg Scott still viewed their first round contest as a window of opportunity to turn things around for his unit. Scholars opened bracket play Monday afternoon with a nine point victory over Branch West Orange (Tustin, CA). Confidence began to grow following up their inspiring performance with a convincing win over the Oregon ICE 69-44. Two more exciting victories against Southwest Rebels and the New York Jaguars placed Scholars in the Championship Bracket Wednesday morning versus a talented team from the state of Idaho, Madison. The winner of this contest would advance to the Finals and have a chance to take home the trophy.

Though the kids from Scholars played hard in the semi-final game, they simply ran out of gas against a solid Madison squad who just had a little more in the tank on this day. Scholars fell 63-50, and Madison went on to win the Championship game defeating Arizona Journey by five.

Hats off to the soldiers of Scholar Athletes for a heck of a tournament run! They never gave up in spite of their earlier disappointments and proved that their competitive drive remained throughout their trials. Tremendous dedication was shown by these kids and the coaching staff by taking the negative of an 0-3 start and turning the tables to win four straight games and finish their brilliant run in the semis of such a huge event. Congratulations Scholars... you guys definitely showed Big Time Heart! I am extremely proud of you.

Scott's Future Points to VUSC

It was a difficult decision, but John F. Kennedy High School’s Greg Scott finally put the pen to the paper, committing to attend Vanguard University and play basketball next season for VUSC Head Coach Fred Litzenberger. Scott, a 5’10" point guard, brings in quality high school basketball experience as a three-time All-Empire League player and hopes to help the Lions make a smooth transition into the future after losing four solid seniors who charged Vanguard to the 2006 NAIA Division I National Tournament.

Scott was named to the second-team of the Empire League’s All-League list as a sophomore before earning back-to-back first-team All-League awards in his final two seasons with the Fighting Irish. Scoring 19 points and averaging seven assists and five rebounds per game propelled Scott to the title of Co-Most Valuable Player for the Empire League as a senior in 2006. His senior honors also included making the Chapman and Buena Park All-Tournament teams, while earning consecutive JFKHS Team MVP awards as well. Also named JFK’s Defensive Player of Year, Scott averaged two steals per game for Head Coach Jose Alvarez. Scott also used his playmaking skills at the AAU basketball level, playing for the Scholar-Athletes.

"Greg is a perfect player for Vanguard Basketball," states Litzenberger who is preparing for his first season as VU’s head coach. "He is quick and strong and a very smart point guard. Greg plays hard and is a great passer, and we believe he will fit into our system and become a great leader who will help players around him become better. We liked his game the first time we saw him play and we are excited to have Greg become an important part of our tradition."

The Lions made the program’s second NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2006 and hope to ride the momentum of a 20-13 season into a solid start to the 2006-07 season. Coach Litzenberger, VU’s Associate Head Coach during the 2005-06 season, took over the reigns of the program in April and will guide Scott and the Lions into the future.

Team Spirit

I have awed at a solo performance,
And spectacular flashy display,
But I crave for the best
And my eyes are more blessed,
When an unselfish team makes a play.

A play that’s so perfect and simple,

With the weaving of role with a role-

Every piece partly seen,

Like a fine-tuned machine,

And you notice not one, but the whole.

Like an orchestra tuned to perfection,

Where harmonious beauty is found,

Every note has a quest-

To be part of the rest,

So the whole is a masterpiece sound.

Every wild one, once blinded by glory,

Is now cured and is one of the tame.

He receives his esteem,

As part of the team,

And is eager to sacrifice fame.

It’s amazing what teams have accomplished.

It’s astounding how much they have done,

When the ultimate call,

Is when one is for all,

And the credit is reached for by none.
