Rankings For 14u and 13u Divisions (1/15)
Dave Keefer
CaliforniaPreps.com Publisher
The rankings we compile are intended to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of our extraordinary youth. They are intended to be positive and informative.
Our first rankings took a while to get off the ground because we're trying a different approach. We're gathering as many expert voters as we can and we expect many more to be involved soon. For now we're going ahead with the rankings based on the initial voting members who have responded. We'll do only the 14u and 13u divisions this time. We had some ballots for 12u and 11u but not enough to be representative.
Each voter could rank teams only in their own division and could not vote for their own team. We weighted the results based on a point system that was mathematically adjusted so that no team had an unfair advantage by not having a voting member (and thus be eligible to get votes from all voting members - while others received potentially less votes because they had voting members who could not vote for their own team). Without getting too complicated, here are the results.
All the voters were surprisingly close on how they ranked the teams. They represented a wide sampling of teams in the whole region so this is a good start to the season. Keep in mind, the season's young and a lot of teams haven't been seen much yet and a lot of top teams haven't faced each other yet. So we expect a lot of changes and movement as the season progresses.
14u Division
1. Team California no surprise here. They are talented top to bottom and have the record to prove it. Four of their top players have announced that they will play at Fontana HS next year.
2. RSA another talented team but a notch below Team California.
3. Scholar Athletes a "new" team that has split off from ACES. They gave Team California a run for their money in the CAVS tourney, as reported here on CaliforniaPreps. They barely missed the #2 slot.
4. ABC Hoops a team we haven't seen yet but the voting panelists all have a high regard for them. We hope to see them in the California Invitational this weekend.
5. ARC Vikings could move up if they continue to do well this year and more people see them.
6. (tie) ABA have gone 1-2 against the Scholars already.
6. (tie) ARC Gorillas won the "ARC Fall Brawl" beating ARC Vikings; have lost to RSA (AAU regionals) and Scholar Athletes (CaliforniaPreps tourney).
8. MV Tarheels should have another strong season.
9. NC Express this San Diego team travels north enough to be eligible to be ranked. They also play well enough to be highly regarded and ranked. They played strong in the toughest bracket at the CaliforniaPreps tourney.
10. All-American a disappointing no-show at the CaliforniaPreps tourney. We wonder if they avoid some of the better teams but they nonetheless deserve their top ten ranking.
11. (tie) Mason Basketball School this ranking may surprise some, but they got a lot of respect from the panel.
11. (tie) Saddleback Valley always a team to be reckoned with.
13. One Tough School ready to move up.
14. Redland D-Shoot barely placed; now need to prove they belong.
15. A1A they got no votes because nobody has seen them play. They have played out of the region while running up a bunch of wins. We saw them a few months ago and know they deserve to be on this list somewhere. So we gave them an honorary "15" this week only in hopes they will start playing locally.

14u Championship: Scholar Athletes 75, ARC Gorillas 56
Gregg Scott's debut with his new Scholar Athletes team was a huge success as they finished the tournament strong with an impressive win over a good ARC Gorillas squad. Scott is off to a great start with the newly-names Scholars.
The champs jumped out to a quick lead and ARC never recovered. They led 6-0, 9-6, and 20-7 before Deuce Johnson hit a nice soft jumper for ARC in an effort to slow them down. Patrick Moran helped set the tone for the Scholars as he responded with two net-swishing three-pointers to spread to gap and make it 26-9.
They kept rolling as Andy Brown's nifty drive to the rack made the score 35-18. But ARC is the kind of team you can't let up on because they are a quality team. They put together a mini run of 6-0 (capped by Rene Reyes' 3-pt play) to cut the deficit to eleven. But they could never get closer then ten points the rest of the way and trailed 38-26 at the half. Besides Moran (4 threes in first half) and Brown (7 pts), Chris Bearden and Andrew Bock provided more than enough offensive firepower to fuel the big lead.
It was more of the same in the second half as the lead grew to 43-28. Jason Lang nailed a three for ARC to cut the deficit to ten at 55-45. But behind Richard Johnson and Bearden, the Scholars kept pushing and the lead ballooned to 70-49 and it was all over. No excuses were made by coach Lee Garson for ARC who played three games the last day and seemed to poop out a bit. He gave full credit to the Scholar Athletes who played an excellent game and looked unbeatable on this night.
Scoring:
Scholar Athletes - Bearden 21, Bock 6, Brown 11, David Enfinger 3, Johnson 11, Moran 14, John Russo 2, Kendall Williams 1, Dele Olora 4.
ARC Gorillas - Alex Reyes 17 (3 threes), Shayan Edrisavi 7, Mark Haskell 4, Lang 5, Rene Reyes 8, William Segura 4, James ("Deuce") Johnson 11 (and seemingly an equal amount of blocks).
